Okay, I admit. I am not a “do-er”. I much prefer hanging out and watching other people “do” all around me. Sometimes I offer feedback or suggestions for improvement, while I sit with my feet up and just blissfully stay in my state of “being”.

This drives most everyone in my life crazy.

But alas, I do have to be productive. So I do have a To Do list. I am not a slave to it, like most of you ramped-up–over-achievers out there, because if it has too much power over me, my Inner Rebel takes over and I feel the sudden, very serious urge to leave the country.

So I’ve learned I have to have the right balance of “To Do’s.” The first thing I do when I write down my list for the day is write things like:

Take Shower
Drink Coffee
Brush Teeth

(Those cross-outs are intentional. I write those things down, and cross ‘em right out! I know, it’s cheating, but it makes me feel really productive.)

By doing this, I’ve accomplished so much and feel so good about it that sometimes I want to treat myself to a late morning nap. But most days, I have to add a few other more grown up things, like:

1.	Call about homeowners insurance. (Don’t cry, it’s okay … you can do it..)
2.	Go to DMV – (then slit your wrists if you need to, or go spend an insane amount of money on needless plastic shit to reward yourself. As a mater of fact, cross out all New Year’s goals because accomplishing this one trumps all others.)
3.	Dry Cleaners (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz – skip this if you want.)
4.	Cancel unwanted spam account that you didn’t sign up for but keeps charging your account. (What the hell? How did that happen? Who are these people? Damn, now I might need to look into Identify Theft Monitoring. UGH)

Because naps were more fun than the list, one day I realized I had a big nasty monster of a list. I was getting more and more depressed as I reviewed it. Even taking a shower felt like Mission Impossible. So I wrote a big X through my list and off to the side I wrote

“This is what I GET TO DO today.”

And then something magical happened. I envisioned all the little things that I get to do, no have to’s or should’s allowed.

My first “Get To” List:
1.	I get to sit on my porch and enjoy a cup off coffee.
2.	I get to watch this crazy lizard running up the screen while I write in my journal.
3.	I get to take my diva daughter to school and hear all about the trials and tribulations of being 4 in today’s world. (People, it is TOUGH!)
4.	I get to eat a PB&J, which reminds me of my Grammie, who died so long ago but left behind a legacy on how to make the most awesome PB&J.
5.	I get to pick up my son at the bus stop, and hear his fart jokes for the day.
6.	I get to talk to my fellow badass friends and have a deep belly laugh.

I have to say, the day I made that list was one of the best days I’ve had in a long time. It’s like gratitude in action. It’s a reminder of all the things I really care about.

It even changed the entire way I approached an interview! Instead of being nervous and intimidated on the morning of the 2-hour lunch interview, I wrote “I get to have lunch with new people, get to know them, and learn about an interesting company.” That’s how I approached the interview, and I had a BLAST!

So try it. Tell me what you think. I swear I think it has magical powers. Every day make a Get To List. At the end of the day, see how well you did. And I bet you’ll be surprised at how many of those “To Do’s” you knocked off, too!

So tell me, what’s your Get To today?

Hands down the most important thing I’ve learned since embarking on this Life Coach path is that I am not my thoughts. Can I just tell you what a huge relief that is? If you lived in my brain for 3 minutes you’d run screaming for cover. I have spent most of my life worrying, freaking out, feeling insecure, and internalizing all my “crazy” thoughts. The truth is, they are not crazy at all. It’s part of how our brain works. The more I have learned to “watch” my thoughts, and not define myself by them, the happier I am. It’s that simple.

My colleague, Brooke Castillo, is a phenomenal teacher and weight loss coach. She offered a free telecourse called Self Coaching 101. Brooke pulls from some of the best teachers in the areas of life design, personal development and spirituality and teaches the concept of self-coaching and how our thoughts impact us.

“If you are willing to do the work now-it becomes a way of being. You will step into a life that is lived with awareness and consciousness because each time you feel any negative emotion you see it as a signal to coach yourself and realign with the true essence of you.

Self-coaching 101 teaches you the basics of how to do this. And the basics are enough.” - Brooke

I highly recommend everyone I know listen to this course! Happy listening!

http://www.selfcoaching101.com/
